Space is full of many mysteries. Scientists are constantly acquiring information related to space, making new discoveries. However little we know about space. There are more stars in the universe than all the grains of sand on Earth’s beaches. Comets are remnants of the formation of our own solar system some 4.5 billion years ago. They are made of sand, ice and carbon dioxide. The universe is believed to be 13.8 billion years old and has been expanding since the Big Bang. The largest planet in our solar system is the Sun, around which the other planets revolve.
The sun is so huge that it is difficult to even imagine it. If the sun is considered as a box, then about 13 lakh earths can be pressed into it, while 8 lakh, 30 thousand round earths can be placed in the sun. Sun is 400 times bigger than moon. However, 400 times is also far away. Due to this, both of them appear to us to be almost the same shape in the sky.
The highest mountain known to man is on a minor planet called Vesta. Its height is about 22 km, which is said to be three times higher than Mount Everest. You can’t walk on Jupiter, Shin, Uranus or Neptune, because they don’t have a hard surface you can even stand on! Mars is called red planet because its color is red. This color is due to the large amount of iron oxide on the Martian surface that we know as rust.
Space is completely empty. Due to this, sound waves cannot travel here. This is the reason why astronauts in space cannot hear any sound. However, space contains X-rays and radio waves, which can be picked up by telescopes. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
However, the hottest planet in the solar system is Venus. Its average temperature is 450 degrees Celsius while Mercury has no atmosphere at all. Due to which its temperature fluctuates a lot. From Earth we see the sky as blue, but to astronauts it appears black. If you look carefully at sunset on Earth, the sky turns red, but not everywhere like Earth.
If the Sun is seen from Mars, it appears blue. NASA has also taken a picture of it. This picture was taken in the year 2005. In fact, its color is due to the atmosphere of Mars.
